The PlayStation Portable was entering the twilight of its life. Sony had already announced the PlayStation Vita (then codenamed NGP), set for a late 2011/early 2012 release. Developers were beginning to shift resources away from the aging PSP hardware.

By the time development on what would become WWE 2K12 (released in October 2012) was ramping up, the PSP was considered a "dead" platform in the West. The PS Vita was the new flagship handheld. Therefore, THQ and Yuke's focused their handheld efforts on the Vita.

For the handheld market, THQ made a strategic decision. They released a version of WWE '12 on the Nintendo Wii, but more importantly, they released WWE '12 on the PlayStation Vita... almost. The Vita version was actually a launch title for the system in early 2012.
