The Curse of La Llorona, the 2019 film, takes place in 1970s Mexico. A social worker, Evelyn (played by Linda Cardellini), is dealing with a difficult case involving a young mother who claims her children are being terrorized by a malevolent spirit. As Evelyn investigates the case, she discovers that the spirit is none other than La Llorona.

The film follows Evelyn and her two children as they try to survive the wrath of La Llorona. As the spirit becomes more aggressive, Evelyn turns to a local shaman for help. The shaman tells her that La Llorona is a vengeful spirit who is seeking to claim the souls of children.

When Malverde realized what she had done, she was overcome with grief and remorse. She spent the rest of her days searching for her children, weeping and crying out for them. According to legend, Malverde's spirit was doomed to roam the earth, searching for her children and scaring others in the process.
