The narrative begins with Narada approaching Brahma with a heavy heart. He asks a question that resonates with the condition of all souls in the material world: "O Lord, how can the jivas (living entities) living in the age of Kali cross over the ocean of material existence?"

Brahma states that the "secret name" or the "essence of all the Vedas" is the chanting of the Holy Names of God. This is known as the .

Brahma declares the mantra: Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare / Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare. He explains that these names destroy the covering of illusion ( Maya ).

Narada points out that in Kali Yuga, the environment is hostile to spiritual life. People have short lifespans, weak memories, and are prone to quarreling and hypocrisy. Traditional methods of self-realization prevalent in previous ages—such as deep meditation ( Dhyana ), elaborate rituals ( Yajna ), and strict deity worship ( Archana )—become almost impossible to perform perfectly due to the degradation of the age. In response to Narada’s inquiry, Lord Brahma reveals the specific remedy for the age of Kali. He does not prescribe severe penances or complex philosophical study. Instead, he prescribes sound vibration.
